Pokémon Sword takes players to the Galar region, a large new setting inspired by the United Kingdom and filled with towns, countryside, stadiums, and the expansive Wild Area. Players begin by choosing Grookey, Scorbunny, or Sobble before setting out to collect Pokémon, challenge Gym Leaders, and uncover the story surrounding the Legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta. The game keeps the familiar structure of a mainline Pokémon RPG while introducing new exploration and battle systems designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch generation.

Explore the Galar Region and Wild Area
Galar combines traditional routes and towns with the Wild Area, a much larger open environment where players can freely control the camera and encounter Pokémon that change depending on location and conditions. This area gives exploration a different rhythm from the more linear routes found elsewhere in the game, while also serving as an important location for catching Pokémon and participating in multiplayer activities.
Dynamax, Gigantamax and Max Raid Battles
One of Pokémon Sword’s major additions is the Dynamax system, which allows Pokémon to grow to enormous size during specific battles. Certain Pokémon can also Gigantamax, changing their appearance and gaining access to special G-Max moves. Max Raid Battles bring up to four Trainers together locally or online to face powerful Dynamax Pokémon, making cooperative play an important part of the Galar experience.
Build and Develop Your Pokémon Team
Team building remains central to Pokémon Sword. Players can catch newly discovered Pokémon alongside familiar species, encounter regional Galarian forms, and strengthen their team through battles and other activities. Poké Jobs provide another way for Pokémon to gain experience, while Pokémon Camp lets players spend time with their team outside battle. These systems make progression about more than simply moving from one Gym challenge to the next.
Expansion Content and Continued Exploration
Pokémon Sword also supports the Expansion Pass, which adds The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. These additional areas expand the adventure beyond the original Galar campaign with new locations, characters, Pokémon, and challenges. For players returning after completing the main story, the expansions provide more opportunities to build teams and continue exploring the world.
