DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World is an RPG centered on befriending, raising, and battling alongside monsters from the legendary DRAGON QUEST series. Players join Bianca and Nera as the two fledgling monster wranglers travel to the Kingdom of Witherwood in search of a cure for their sick fathers. Along the way, they discover a mysterious withered world filled with familiar creatures, new monsters, and unexpected adventures.

Join Bianca and Nera on a New Adventure
The story follows Bianca and Nera, familiar characters from DRAGON QUEST V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. When their fathers fall ill, they are drawn into the Kingdom of Witherwood while searching for a cure. Their journey soon develops into something much larger as they explore fantastical lands and uncover the mysteries behind the world’s withered state. This time, Bianca and Nera become monster wranglers rather than fighting every enemy themselves. Their ability to befriend monsters gives them companions capable of protecting them throughout the adventure. The story provides a fresh role for two established DRAGON QUEST characters while remaining accessible to players discovering them for the first time.
Befriend and Raise Hundreds of Monsters
Monster collecting forms the heart of The Withered World. Players can scout a huge variety of creatures, including recognizable favorites from earlier DRAGON QUEST adventures and completely new monsters. Once recruited, these creatures can join the party and grow stronger through battle. Every monster has individual traits and attributes, while different talents provide further opportunities to develop its abilities. Players can therefore build teams around their preferred combat style rather than simply choosing creatures with the highest basic statistics. Monsters also physically accompany Bianca and Nera while exploring the world. Any recruited creature can travel alongside the heroes regardless of its type or size, making favorite monsters feel like genuine adventure companions rather than units that appear only during combat.
Create New Creatures Through Synthesis
Synthesis adds another layer to monster development. Players can combine two monsters to create a new creature, potentially discovering something they have never encountered in the wild. The system encourages experimentation because a newly synthesized monster can inherit useful talents and become an important part of a stronger party. Rather than treating every recruited creature as the final result, players can consider how it might contribute to future generations of monsters. Repeated synthesis opens many possibilities for developing a team tailored to specific strategies. Combined with leveling and talent development, this system creates a deep progression loop based on scouting, training, synthesizing, and then returning to battle with stronger companions.
Explore a World Filled With Surprises
The adventure extends beyond collecting monsters. Bianca and Nera travel through a visually distinctive fantasy world where exploration continually reveals new environments and discoveries. Square Enix describes the experience around the idea that players never quite know what lies beyond the horizon. Moving into unfamiliar territory can lead to new monsters, locations, and surprises connected to the mystery of the withered world. Having chosen monsters follow the protagonists also makes exploration feel closely connected to the creature-collecting system. Instead of separating overworld travel from party building, the game lets players experience both together. This creates a journey where finding a new monster can be just as exciting as discovering the next destination.
Battle Other Monster Wranglers Online
Players who want to test their carefully developed teams can take them into online battles. The game supports different competitive options, ranging from serious tournaments to more relaxed matches against other monster wranglers. These battles provide another purpose for experimenting with talents, monster combinations, and synthesis. A team designed for the main adventure may perform differently when facing strategies created by another player, encouraging further refinement. Strong performances can also lead to rewards, giving dedicated players another objective after building a powerful collection. On Nintendo Switch, online play supports up to four players, while the main adventure remains a single-player experience.
