Sangokushi 14 with Power Up Kit is an expanded version of KOEI TECMO’s historical strategy game, also known internationally as ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS XIV: Diplomacy and Strategy Expansion Pack Bundle. Set during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era of China, the game puts players in command of a chosen force as they manage territory, recruit officers, build armies, and compete for control of the land.

Fight for Control of Ancient China
The campaign allows players to choose a scenario and take command of one of the available forces. Each faction begins with different officers, territories, and strategic circumstances, so the challenge can change significantly depending on the ruler selected. Players must strengthen their position while watching rival forces expand across the same map. Cities and surrounding areas provide the resources needed to maintain an army, making territorial control essential for long-term success. Expanding recklessly can leave important positions vulnerable, while remaining defensive for too long gives rivals time to become stronger. The game therefore turns the struggle for China into a large strategic contest where domestic management, military preparation, and territorial expansion constantly influence one another.
Expand Your Territory Across a Detailed Map
Territory plays a particularly important role in Sangokushi 14. The map divides land into hexagonal spaces, with different terrain affecting how quickly military units can move. Areas contain cores that players must capture to establish control, while cities, ports, and gates can also function as strategically valuable positions. Controlled regions generate gold, supplies, and troops, directly connecting territorial expansion with the strength of the player’s faction. This creates more strategic possibilities than simply capturing major cities. Players can secure surrounding territory, establish stronger front lines, and prepare favorable routes before beginning a major offensive. Careful expansion can strengthen an army before it ever reaches the enemy’s main defenses.
Command Officers and Prepare for War
Building a powerful kingdom requires more than sending troops into battle. Domestic administration provides the economic and military foundation needed to sustain expansion. Players can improve commerce to increase gold income, recruit additional troops, raise morale, and assign capable officers to important responsibilities. Officers therefore become valuable resources both on and away from the battlefield. When war begins, formations, terrain, military facilities, and unit composition can determine whether an offensive succeeds. Arrow Towers and Camps can create favorable defensive positions, while specialized siege formations are particularly effective against fortified bases. Strong preparation often matters as much as raw troop numbers, rewarding players who develop their territory before committing to a difficult campaign.
Use Diplomacy and Geographic Advantages
The Power Up Kit expands the original strategy with additional systems that create new approaches to conquest. Geographic Advantage provides special effects when a force controls particular provinces, making some regions strategically valuable beyond their normal resources. Players can also trade with foreign nations to acquire useful items, including specialties and tactic tomes. These mechanics encourage players to consider the wider political and geographical situation rather than focusing exclusively on nearby enemies. A province may become important because of the advantage it provides, while foreign relationships can create opportunities that strengthen a campaign. This expanded strategic layer makes the struggle for China more dynamic and gives territorial decisions greater long-term consequences.
Face Outlander Forces and New Strategic Threats
The expansion introduces Outlander Forces, powerful tribes that can become either allies or enemies depending on how players handle them. False Information also provides another tactical option, allowing commanders to mislead enemy forces and draw them toward prepared traps. War Chronicles adds special scenarios with designated officers and dedicated maps, providing challenges outside the standard campaign structure. The game also includes tutorial episodes covering fundamental mechanics and additional expansion systems such as tactical battles and Geographic Advantage. Together, these additions provide experienced players with more strategic variables while giving newcomers a structured way to learn the game’s extensive systems.
Experience Grand Strategy on Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch version supports handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, allowing players to manage their kingdom in different play settings. Almost all parts of the game also support touch controls, which can make navigating its information-heavy strategy interface more convenient in handheld mode. Gameplay progresses through Strategy, Advancement, and Reporting phases. Players issue commands during the Strategy Phase, watch those orders unfold during Advancement, and then receive updated financial and strategic information during the Reporting Phase. This structured cycle gives players time to plan before watching the consequences of their decisions develop across the battlefield.
