High On Life opens with a situation that is both ridiculous and dangerous: an alien gang has come to Earth just to use humans as a “high”. No one can stop them, and you – an unemployed graduate – suddenly become the planet’s only hope. Not because you are good, but because there is no one else. With the first talking gun in hand, the unexpected adventure begins.

The game has the typical black comedy of Squanch Games, making each segment full of satire. The setting and characters are uniquely designed, the guns constantly talk, tease and react like real people. The story becomes an involuntary journey, where you explore the universe not only to fight, but also to understand yourself in a world that has lost order.

Talking guns and gameplay

The most special point of High On Life is not the weapons, but their personalities. Each gun has its own voice, its own personality, and sometimes… even argues with you. The game combines first-person shooting action, light platforming elements, and lots of humorous dialogue. The combat mechanism is not too complicated, but in return there are funny situations. Some levels even take you into surreal spaces, where the definition of “game” becomes vague. High On Life does not create a feeling of tension like other FPS games, but always maintains its appeal thanks to its own unmistakable quality.

DLC High On Knife takes things further

After defeating G3 and becoming a famous bounty hunter, you think the adventure is over. But DLC High On Knife quickly breaks that thought. This time, you accompany Knifey – a talking knife, bloodthirsty and extremely… funny. The goal seems simple: track down a package. But the deeper you go, the more bizarre conspiracies you discover than the previous G3 gang.

The new setting takes you to the planet Zephyr Paradise – where the rules of physics, biology or morality can be turned upside down. From a delivery company run by mentally disturbed robots, to bosses that are both strange and scary, the DLC expands everything: both in design, madness and “comedy” level. If the main part is a joke, then High On Knife is the finale that makes players laugh even when… having a gun pointed at their face.

High On Life is not for those who like to be serious or demand orthodox gameplay. This is a product born from unlimited imagination, where all rules are broken. The story is sometimes nonsensical, the combat is sometimes chaotic, but it is that irreverence that creates a unique experience.
