Mortal Kombat 11 brings NetherRealm Studios’ long-running fighting series to Nintendo Switch with a combination of cinematic storytelling, competitive battles, character customization, and the franchise’s signature finishing moves. Released in 2019, the game introduces new fighters alongside returning characters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Liu Kang, and Johnny Cage. Players can experience the game in handheld, tabletop, or TV mode while choosing between story content, traditional fights, challenge-based modes, local multiplayer, and online competition.

Strategic Fighting with Krushing Blows and Fatalities
Mortal Kombat 11 builds its combat around precise attacks, defensive timing, combos, special moves, and character-specific abilities. Each fighter has a distinctive playstyle that can favor aggressive pressure, ranged attacks, grappling, or defensive strategies. Krushing Blows add powerful cinematic attacks that activate under specific conditions, while Fatal Blows give players another opportunity to turn a difficult fight around. The series’ iconic Fatalities also return, providing elaborate finishing sequences after a match has been decided.
A Cinematic Story Across Multiple Timelines
The story of Mortal Kombat 11 focuses on Kronika, the Keeper of Time, whose attempt to rewrite history brings together fighters from different periods of the Mortal Kombat timeline. Characters from the present encounter younger versions of themselves and former allies or enemies as the conflict spreads across Earthrealm, Outworld, and other locations. Players control multiple fighters throughout the campaign, allowing the Story Mode to introduce much of the roster while continuing events from earlier Mortal Kombat games.
Customize Fighters with Character Variations
One of Mortal Kombat 11’s major additions is the Custom Character Variation System. Players can personalize fighters through different abilities, gear pieces, skins, intros, victory animations, and other cosmetic elements. Different combinations allow players to adjust how their favorite characters look and, depending on the mode, how they approach combat. This system provides additional progression outside individual matches and gives players more ways to develop characters they use regularly.
Towers of Time, The Krypt and Online Competition
Beyond Story Mode, Mortal Kombat 11 includes several modes built around different types of progression and competition. Towers of Time presents rotating combat challenges with special conditions and rewards, while The Krypt allows players to explore Shang Tsung’s island and unlock additional items. Online players can compete through ranked and casual matches as well as Kombat League, while local multiplayer makes it possible for two players to fight on the same Nintendo Switch system.
Aftermath Expands the Mortal Kombat 11 Story
The Aftermath expansion continues directly from the conclusion of Mortal Kombat 11’s original campaign. Fire God Liu Kang must work with unexpected allies, including Shang Tsung, to restore history and secure the future of the realms. The expansion adds another cinematic storyline along with additional playable characters. Later editions such as Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate combine the original game with Aftermath and both Kombat Packs, substantially expanding the available roster and story content.
Mortal Kombat 11 on Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch version provides the same core fighting systems, story campaign, customization mechanics, and major game modes while allowing players to move between portable and television play. It supports single-system multiplayer, local wireless matches, and online play, making it possible to practice alone, fight another nearby player, or compete against opponents online. With its large roster, multiple progression systems, cinematic campaign, and extensive post-launch content, Mortal Kombat 11 remains one of the most feature-rich fighting games released for Nintendo Switch.
