River City Girls is a colorful beat ’em up that brings the classic River City series back with two energetic heroines at the center of the action. Misako and Kyoko discover that their boyfriends, Kunio and Riki, have been kidnapped. Instead of waiting for someone else to solve the problem, they head into the streets themselves. Players fight through River City, defeat groups of enemies, learn new attacks, buy useful items, and confront powerful bosses. With pixel-art graphics, anime-inspired scenes, humor, and cooperative action, River City Girls delivers a modern take on classic side-scrolling brawlers for Nintendo Switch.

Join Misako and Kyoko on a rescue mission

The adventure begins when Misako and Kyoko learn that Kunio and Riki have apparently been kidnapped. The two girls immediately decide to find them, even if that means fighting almost everyone standing in their way. Their search takes them across several districts of River City, where new enemies and strange characters continually complicate the rescue mission. The story does not take itself too seriously. Humorous conversations, exaggerated personalities, and unexpected situations keep the atmosphere playful between battles. Misako and Kyoko also bring different personalities to the adventure, helping the story feel energetic even during quieter moments. Familiar faces from the wider Kunio-kun universe appear alongside new characters, creating plenty for longtime fans to recognize. At the same time, newcomers can easily follow the simple objective: explore the city, beat up anyone causing trouble, and discover what really happened to Kunio and Riki.

Fight through the streets of River City

Combat follows the classic beat ’em up formula but adds enough variety to make progression satisfying. Players move through streets, schools, shopping areas, and other locations while groups of enemies attempt to stop Misako and Kyoko. Basic attacks are easy to understand, but the combat system gradually expands with additional moves and techniques. Players can punch, kick, grab opponents, launch enemies into the air, and create combinations that make fights faster and more effective. Weapons found around the environment provide additional ways to deal damage. Defeated enemies also provide money and experience, connecting every street fight to character progression. Bosses offer more demanding encounters and require players to recognize attack patterns instead of relying entirely on aggressive button pressing. The result keeps the immediate appeal of an arcade brawler while adding enough development to make the journey across River City feel like a larger adventure.

Learn new moves and improve your fighters

Misako and Kyoko become stronger as players continue fighting. Experience helps improve their capabilities, while money collected from defeated enemies can be spent throughout the city. Shops sell food, accessories, and other useful items that can provide advantages during the adventure. Players can also purchase new combat techniques, gradually expanding the number of attacks available during fights. This progression system encourages experimentation because new moves can change how players approach groups of enemies. River City Girls also allows certain defeated opponents to become recruits. These characters can later assist during combat, adding another option when a fight becomes difficult. Combining character upgrades, purchased techniques, equipment, and recruits gives players several ways to improve their chances against stronger opponents. These RPG elements make progression more substantial than simply moving from one stage to another and help distinguish the game from traditional arcade-style beat ’em ups.
