Sonic Mania Plus expands the original Sonic Mania experience with additional playable characters, a new Encore Mode, expanded multiplayer features, and changes to several familiar stages. Released for Nintendo Switch in 2018, the game combines the fast side-scrolling platforming of classic Sonic titles with newly designed zones and updated versions of locations from earlier games. Players can control Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, and Ray while exploring stages built around speed, platforming, alternate routes, and character-specific abilities.

Classic Sonic Platforming with Modern Level Design
Sonic Mania Plus follows the traditional 2D gameplay of the early Sonic the Hedgehog games, with players running through stages, collecting rings, discovering hidden routes, and battling Dr. Eggman’s machines. Each zone contains multiple paths that reward exploration as well as speed, and different characters can reach areas in different ways. Sonic relies on his speed and Drop Dash, Tails can fly, and Knuckles can glide and climb walls, giving familiar stages different routes depending on the selected character.
Mighty and Ray Join the Playable Roster
Sonic Mania Plus introduces Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel as playable characters. Mighty can use his strength and defensive abilities to interact with certain obstacles, while Ray can glide through the air and maintain momentum across large sections of a stage. Their movement mechanics differ significantly from Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, providing new ways to approach both returning zones and original environments. The expanded five-character roster also gives players more reasons to replay stages and experiment with alternate routes.
Encore Mode Changes the Adventure
Encore Mode provides an alternative version of the Sonic Mania campaign with changes to stage layouts, enemy placement, visual elements, and character progression. Instead of relying on a traditional life system, players build a group of available characters and can switch between members of the team during the adventure. Bonus stages and other challenges are also adjusted for the mode, making Encore more than a simple replay of the standard campaign and providing a different experience for players already familiar with Sonic Mania.
Returning Zones and Original Locations
The game combines reimagined environments from earlier Sonic titles with entirely new zones created for Sonic Mania. Locations such as Green Hill and Flying Battery return with redesigned sections and new mechanics, while original areas including Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon introduce their own visual themes and gameplay ideas. Each zone is divided into acts with different routes, obstacles, enemies, and boss encounters, mixing recognizable elements from classic Sonic games with new level designs.
Competition and Multiplayer Features
Sonic Mania Plus expands the game’s Competition Mode to support up to four players, allowing friends to race through stages and compare their performance. The game also retains cooperative elements associated with Sonic and Tails as well as other single-player challenges. On Nintendo Switch, these modes work particularly well with the console’s flexible controller setup, allowing the game to move easily between handheld, tabletop, and TV play depending on how players want to experience the stages.
Sonic Mania Plus on Nintendo Switch
Sonic Mania Plus brings together classic Sonic mechanics, redesigned stages, original zones, five playable characters, and the additional Encore Mode in one package. Mighty and Ray provide new movement options, while Competition Mode adds another way to experience the game’s high-speed stages with other players. For Nintendo Switch players interested in 2D platforming and the classic Sonic style, Sonic Mania Plus offers a substantial variation on the original Sonic Mania formula.
